"As an artist and an art teacher, I find myself frequently telling people about the passion I have for the job I do. They often ask why would someone do this, it doesn’t pay much, and people can often be critical about what they see and don’t understand. For me, the answer is simple; passion.
For me, passion is about how I feel about the subject, how I’m going to use my materials, and how I am going to get the viewer to understand that my life revolves around thinking both in, and outside the box. For these reasons I do not limit myself to one medium, but I push the limits of what I have to show people what influences me, and how I want to display my approach. My emotional connection to the piece will sometimes reveal itself in realistic subject matter with a twist on color, an angle on an architectural piece that makes me feel awed, or an abstract that reveals my non-conformist thinking. I am always drawn to the organic shapes found in nature, as well as the symmetry in a man made world. These concepts will be carried out with a bold use of color, and an attempt to show myself getting lost in the piece, so my soul becomes evident.
It is for these reasons I generally start a piece of work with a mood I want to create, sometimes using photos for a more controlled subject such as architecture, or I will throw paint onto a piece of paper, create a background, and the piece will tell me what it wants to become. I love to work on 20x30 pieces of paper to have room to move, and would work larger if space permitted! The process in my work shows the many sides to my personality, from painstaking colored pencil work, to mixed media explosions, my world continues to evolve, and I learn more about myself with each new piece." |
