“Mood and Memory”

A little mystery in a painting heightens my interest in it. I suppose that goes a long way toward explaining why my own paintings offer more than a hint of mystery and why I set out to create a mood rather than recording what I see in front of me.

In this show, each painting has its own personality, offering a glimpse into the mind of the artist. Some are serene and contemplative landscapes, while others feature geometric compositions and intense colors.

When I am asked how I choose my subject matter, I reply that I almost feel as if the subject chooses me! Although I start with an idea, it can be as simple as a color I want to use or a phrase that interests me. Hardly ever do I have a fixed idea about what the finished painting will be. My paintings seem to evolve in ways that continually surprise me.

My art journey has not been linear, but circles back, and themes have danced in and out of my work over the years. I love it when that happens!
